Not charging? Try these 5 steps first
- Try another charger and cable. Cables fail more often than ports.
- Try every port. If one works, the Mac can still charge.
- Look in the port with a torch. Lint can stop the plug going in all the way. Don't use metal to clean it.
- Restart it properly. Apple silicon: shut down, wait 30 seconds, turn it on. Intel: reset the SMC.
- Check the battery menu. If it says charging is on hold at 80%, that is Optimised Battery Charging. It is normal.

Questions people ask
How much does it cost to fix a MacBook charging port?
From $129 at our workshop. If the fault is a chip on the board behind the port, board repair starts from $249.
Is it worth fixing a charging port?
Yes, if the rest of the Mac works. It costs far less than a new Mac.
How do I know if my charging port is damaged?
The plug is loose, it only charges at certain angles, or one port works and another does not. A burnt smell or dark mark is a sign to stop using it.
Can you fix just one port?
Often, yes. We fix the faulty port or chip and leave the working ones alone.
My MacBook stops charging at 80%. Is the port broken?
No. That is Optimised Battery Charging. macOS holds the charge at 80% to protect the battery.
