Plug your Mac into a TV or monitor first. If the picture shows there, the Mac itself is working.
| What you see | Likely cause | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cracked glass or black blots | Broken panel | New display |
| Lines or wrong colours | Panel or display cable | New display or cable, after testing |
| Very dark, but a faint picture under a torch | Backlight fault: a fuse, chip or cable | Often a board or cable fix, cheaper than a new screen |
| Uneven light at the bottom edge (MacBook Pro 2016 to 2017) | Worn display cable, known as flexgate | Cable or display |
| Picture cuts out when you move the lid | Cable in the hinge | Cable or display |
| Black screen, external monitor works | Screen or its cable | New display or cable |
| Black screen, external monitor is black too | Main board or power fault | Logic board repair |
| Stains or lines after a spill | Liquid inside the display or on its cable | Water damage repair |
From $149 at our workshop. The final price depends on the model and whether the fault is the panel, the cable or the backlight.
If the rest of the Mac works, usually yes. A screen costs far less than a new MacBook. We check the Mac first, so you are not paying for a screen on a Mac with another fault.
On most MacBooks, no. The glass, panel and backlight are one sealed part, so we replace the whole display. On some faults, like a dark screen, we can fix the backlight instead.
Probably not the panel. A faint picture under a torch means the backlight has failed. That is often a fuse, a chip or a cable, and it can cost less than a new screen.
Usually 24 to 72 hours once the part is here. We tell you the timing when you call.
Have your Mac's model ready. It is under the Apple menu, in About This Mac.
